You are not playing against the dealer in baccarat — you are betting on which hand, Player or Banker, will have a total closest to 9. You can also bet that the two hands will Tie. Aces are worth 1. Cards 2–9 are worth their face value. Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings are all worth 0. If a hand total exceeds 9, only the second digit counts — so a 7 and an 8 (total 15) counts as 5, not 15. This is the one rule that trips up new players most often.
Both Player and Banker start with two cards. A third card may be drawn based on fixed rules — if the Player's total is 0–5, Player draws a third card. If the Player stands, Banker draws on 0–5. If the Player draws, Banker's third card rule depends on both the Banker's total and the Player's drawn card.
